5 Signs you Need to See a Physio!

One of the Biggest things we hear here at The Physio & Sports Injury Clinic when people come in for their Initial Consultations is how long people have suffered in pain for, before plucking up the courage to go and seek help from a Physiotherapist. People almost apologise to me for not coming in sooner?? WHY?

Yes you don’t want to ‘cry wolf’ and come in when there is nothing wrong but its human natural to let things drag on in the hope it will just go in its own! So It seems most people do not know when to seek Physiotherapy help/guidance. So today we are going to discuss 5 main signs when you should see a Physio.

Here are five signs you need to see a Physiotherapist:

  1. Nagging aches and pains which don’t settle after a week or 2.

    Everybody suffers from pains somewhere on the body at some point. Yes if you train hard in th gym or go for a big run the next day will be sore (but thats expected), but if your pain is persistent and not getting any better at all, that is a sure sign that you need to see a physio to get your pain/injury diagnosed.

  2. Radiating pain down your arm or leg.

    If you are experiencing any tingling sensations, like pins and needles down a limb it could mean a problem with your nerves. Physiotherapists are trained to detect neurological issues (including Trapped nerve pain and Sciatica).

  3. A sudden change in Movement or Mobility.

    Mobility and movement for most people are something fairly consistent (consistently good or bad)! So you don’t expect to change overnight? If you suddenly wake up and can’t move as you could the day before past a certain point then it suggests that there is something going on, such as a trauma or injury and should be assessed by a Physiotherapist.

  4. Loss of Balance.

    Loss of balance is a huge problem for people and its not just the elderly. I see people of all ages with very poor balance. Poor balance could cause you to hurt yourself when you’re not expecting it. If you fall and hit your head it could be fatal otherwise if you put your hand out you may break a bone! Researchers have suggested that poor balance as we get older could predispose ourselves to Alzheimers disease (2). If you notice a loss of balance that is not related to any ear issues (e.g. infections) then speak with a physio to see how they can help.

  5. You need to get better as quickly as possible (e.g. for sport or work).

    If you have got a deadline to be better by a certain date following an injury for a sport you do or a job you earn a living from, then Physio is a great place to start. Physio is proven to speed up the rate of heeling for Musculoskeletal based injuries (e.g to your soft tissues: muscle/tendon and ligaments). Just look at how the world of professional sport utilises Physio like mad. Why wait ages when you could be doing the right things from day 1!
